{"id":14106,"date":"2016-05-02T13:42:17","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T11:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.guideaurearoma.it\/visite-guidate-roma\/villa-adriana-tour\/"},"modified":"2024-11-06T21:25:15","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T20:25:15","slug":"villa-adriana-tour","status":"publish","type":"visite-guidate-roma","link":"https:\/\/guideaurearoma.it\/en\/tour\/villa-adriana-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Villa Adriana Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discover the guided tour to the residence of the famous Emperor Hadrian!<br>Villa Adriana is the\u00a0<strong>largest of all the imperial villa complexes<\/strong>\u00a0and extends itself over an area of about\u00a0<strong>120 hectares<\/strong>, at the foot of the Tiburtine Hills, in the southeast of Tivoli (ancient Tibur), a resort location appreciated since ancient times for its pleasant climate and diverse and charming landscape. Built between 118 and 133 AD, this huge\u00a0<strong>park-like garden<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the most notable examples of imperial and dynastic palaces to have survived until present days.<br><strong>The tour of Villa Adriana<\/strong>\u00a0winds through plateaus, meadows, ponds, ruins and monuments of the most varied shapes and origin, surrounded by greenery in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. After first stopping at a small pavilion, where a plastic model of the original Villa is displayed, the tour will starts from the scenic\u00a0<strong>Lake of the Pecile,<\/strong>\u00a0heading straight to the\u00a0<strong>Philosopher\u2019s Hall,<\/strong>\u00a0an imposing apse-shaped hall for holding office, once lavishly decorated. Next to it is the so-called called\u00a0<strong>Maritime Theatre,<\/strong>\u00a0one of the most unique and famous parts of the complex, a complete \u201cvilla in miniature\u201d surrounded by a canal. Villa Adriana was probably the\u00a0<strong>private summer retreat<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of the emperor<\/strong>.<br>Through the so-called Libraries Courtyard (which probably used to host\u00a0<strong>summer triclinia<\/strong>), the Villa Adriana tour will continue to the\u00a0<strong>Praetorians\u2019 dormitory<\/strong>\u00a0(which were the\u00a0<strong>elite guard<\/strong>\u00a0of the Emperor) and the\u00a0<strong>grand<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>dining room<\/strong>, known as the\u00a0<strong>Imperial Triclinium.<\/strong>\u00a0From here, we make a quick visit to the\u00a0<strong>Imperial Palace,<\/strong>\u00a0a series of structures\u00a0<strong>(courtyards, libraries, nymphaeums)<\/strong>\u00a0which were probably\u00a0<strong>used for State functions.<\/strong>\u00a0Passing through the\u00a0<strong>Hall of Doric<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Pillars<\/strong>, we then head to the\u00a0<strong>Golden Square,<\/strong>\u00a0which was used by the emperor as a\u00a0<strong>Grand Hall for parties<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>banquets,<\/strong>\u00a0with facilities that could accommodate hundreds of people.<br>We then visit the\u00a0<strong>fire station<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Terme<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>con Heliocaminus<\/strong>\u00a0(the\u00a0<strong>Turkish Bath\u00a0<\/strong>of the Villa) and, finally, we will be in what was the winter residence of the emperor, an unitary complex consisting of three buildings, a perfect example of the artistic and architectural genius to whom the project owes most of its facilities.<br>Nearby we will find two\u00a0<strong>Spa facilities:<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Piccole Terme<\/strong>\u00a0(or\u00a0<strong>Small Spa)<\/strong>, whose wealth and originality of structure suggest that it was reserved for the Emperor and high-ranking guests, and the\u00a0<strong>Grandi Terme\u00a0<\/strong>(or\u00a0<strong>Big Spa<\/strong>), probably intended for servants working at the Villa Adriana.<br>Finally, we come to the most famous and fascinating structure of the entire complex, the focal point of the tour: the\u00a0<strong>Canopu.<\/strong>\u00a0This was a\u00a0<strong>place<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of remembrance and introspection for Hadrian<\/strong>, also built in memory and in honour of his great love, the beautiful young\u00a0<strong>Antinous,<\/strong>\u00a0who died in tragic and mysterious circumstances during a trip to Egypt.
